Container Prices appear to be headed higher…

Last month in The Journal of Commerce there was an article entitled “Container Ship Deliveries Set to Soar” and in that article it was noted that shipyards were set to deliver vessels with a combined capacity of 430,000 twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the next three months. Given that each of these new ships will require approximately 1.8 TEUs of containers for each available slot to become operational the demand for available boxes is set to increase by approximately 774,000 TEUs.

While not all of these containers will come from the U.S. depots this increased demand is already being reflected in the pricing of containers coming out of the port of NY/NJ.

An alert reader has provided me with the following data points from the port of New Jersey:

20’ Standard Dry Box

December 2009                          $850

April 2010                                   $950

May 2010                                $1,100

The recent increase represents a 29% increase in prices at the port since December 2009. Stay tuned.

Finishing Up - Electrical Hookup and Final Touches

On Friday April 9th, 2010 Beau Mobile's container modification project got the electrical panel hooked up and by Monday the 12th the only things left to do were to install one commercial door and then weld the "D" rings to the sides of the containers. These "D" rings are a safety feature of the portable offices. When the user opens the exterior doors they will be able to use the lock to secure the door in the open position. This will provide the user security against accidental lock in risks.

Here is our final video for this project.

Getting close now!

I haven't had the time to get you guys an updated video but I figure that I can still share a couple pictures of the current state of the construction site container modifications. The new offices are looking great and we "turned on the lights" this morning on the offices. They can now be hooked up to a generator and power the lights and anything else we might want to hookup. The guys all decided to power all of their tools for office two thru office one.

Everything should done and ready by Monday! I am very happy with the way they are turning out. I really love the look of the commercial doors and windows. They are fairly expensive but you really do get what you pay for.  I am also happy that I worked in a utility room and coffee station into the design. It all works well.  See for yourself...

From this view you can see inside of our construction site office and get a glimpse of the coffee station and utility/storage room.

This shot shows the front view of the secure construction office with the commercial door installed and the heavy outside container doors opened.

Video Update - Beau Mobile cuts metal

Today was a big day for Beau Mobile Storage as we finally got a chance to cut into the sides of our brand new shipping containers. As I wrote about in a recent post we took delivery last Friday of two new containers to be converted into construction site offices. Due to a couple of scheduling problems with our contractor partners we were not able to get to the metal cutting until today.

Larry is the guy doing the cool metal cutting stuff in this video and Max is the G.C. with the ability to frame a container while holding a phone in his ear! I am your intrepid blogger and fledgling entrepreneur who stuck to the support role cutting insulation and bolting a window into a pre-cut hole along with being primary videographer. I left all of the skill position work to the pros.

Enjoy today’s video update!
